Real Madrid ‘end’ Raphael Varane transfer saga, Varane changes his shirt number
The French man is one of the most wanted centre-backs in Europe with interest from Manchester United, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain. The new Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is a big admirer of the Real Madrid defender and has been chasing the player for the last two years with Chelsea. At Chelsea, his ambitions were not successful but it was believed that Varane would be one of the first signings for Manchester United that Mourinho would make. The rumours had it all covered in the last month or so.
But during the Euro 2016, Zinedine Zidane talked with his compatriot and convinced him to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu, as per reports. Raphael Varane did not participate in the Euro as he was injured and underwent an operation. It is believed that Varane was very much convinced by Zidane’s words and has decided to stay put at the Spanish Capital. Amid the reports, there were still rumours linking Varane with a number of clubs.
Recently, Real Madrid officially announced the news of players changing their shirt numbers ahead of the new season. It is nothing new in a football club, but the notable thing is, a player who is destined to leave a club usually don’t involve in things like this. Varane wore No.2 ever since he joined Real Madrid and it is informed that the player has changed his number to 5.
Dani Carvajal has reacted the quickest to snap the No.2 left by Varane and Lucas Vazquez changed his number to 17, left vacant by Alvaro Arbeloa.
