The Merseysiders had a disappointing season, finishing 8th in Premier League which means they are out of Europe for next season, Liverpool finished as runners-up in the League Cup. Although they were in the Europa League final they eventually lost (3-1) to Sevilla at St.Jakob-Park, which marked the ending of a disappointing season.
Although they were unlucky not to win Silverware last season, there were some positive signs too. Liverpool started playing attractive football under new manager Jurgen Klopp. Their style of playing changed drastically under their new manager, their confidence was rejuvenated and we were able to witness the ‘old’ Liverpool. They made an astonishing comeback against Dortmund in the Quarter Finals of the Europa League, winning (4–3) on aggregate.
We can keep on talking about the positives, but what matters most is the Silverware and Liverpool went trophyless last season. But Liverpool fans are confident in manager Jurgen Klopp after he lifted the underperforming and a young squad.
With the new season upon us, Liverpool fans are demanding improvements in the squad and Jürgen Klopp is not disappointing them. Recent reports suggest the Reds identified 3 players as their preliminary targets this season in order to improve their squad ahead of next season as they look to challenge for the title and make a come-back to Europe.
Here we take a look at those 3 players;
1. Saido Mane
Liverpool are considering a move for the Southampton forward Sadio Mane after their hopes of luring Mario Gotze to Anfield were dashed by the player himself after he stated;
‘I look forward to the new season in Munich and will do everything possible to compete in top shape during my first training session under Carlo Ancelotti,’ Gotze said.
The Senegalese International is a target for Premier League clubs, with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are also behind the impressive winger. Despite going four months without a goal, the 24-year-old ended the campaign as the team’s leading scorer with 15 goals in all competitions. The Senegalese international suits the high-intensity pressing game of manager Jurgen Klopp.
His value is said to be in a region of £20m,but Southampton are holding out for an offer of £40m.
2. Gonzalo Higuain
Reports claim Liverpool could sign Napoli forward Gonzalo Higuain very soon. The former Real Madrid striker netted an astonishing 38 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions for Napoli last season, helping the club secure qualification to next season’s Champions League.
His tremendous goal-scoring exploits have made him one of the most coveted strikers in Europe with several big European clubs chasing him. Chelsea, Juventus, Paris Sanit-Germain, Manchester United are also reportedly watching Higuain’s situation closely.
Recently,Jurgen Klopp was seen attending Argentina’s clash with Chile alongside Higuain’s agent who is also his brother. Higuain to Liverpool will probably be the signing of the season, but Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool should wait until the International tournament is over.
3. Thomas Vermaelen
Thomas Vermaelen could be on his way out of Barcelona this summer who has attracted interests from several Premier League clubs.
The Belgian international joined the Catalan giants from Arsenal in 2014 but his time at the Camp Nou has been cut short by injuries. The former Gunner has made just 11 La Liga appearances in two seasons and played in just 20 games in total.
Liverpool aren’t the only club chasing the Belgian international; the Reds face stiff competition from West Ham. West Ham, who are on the lookout for a new defender appears to be the favourites to land Vermaelen and it is understood that the centre-back would favour a move back to London.
Liverpool have not made any notable impact in the transfer window yet, but have made 3 signings until now, Loris Karius arrived in a £4.7m deal from Mainz, while Liverpool have also completed deals for the former Schalke defender Joel Matip and the Red Star Belgrade playmaker Marko Grujic.
