Griezmann did not deserve Euro 2016 award: Former France defender and 1998 World Cup Winner Frank Leboeuf has criticised the UEFA’s decision to award France winger Antoine Griezmann the Player of the Tournament award in the just ended Euro 2016 Championship. The former World Cup and European Championship winner felt his compatriot was ‘invisible’ in the group stages of the tournament and believes he came to the limelight only in the quarter-finals.

I like Griezmann a lot, but he was not the player of the tournament. I do not agree with this choice.

We have to be critical. We only saw him from the quarter-finals on. He got two chances in the final, but he did not take them.

We did not see too much of him otherwise. But UEFA has always worked like this. They always give man of the match to the player who scored, too,”

Also, the former Chelsea star told that Portugal defender Pepe is the most suitable player for the award and had some other mentions including Real Madrid and Wales star Gareth Bale. The French man criticised the UEFA for acting like this ‘always’ for not crediting the efforts of a defender.

For me, there was someone like Pepe, you had Gareth Bale who led Wales the way, There were a number of players who showed a lot of quality.

Pepe was in great form right from the start until the very end. Griezmann on the other hand was dropped for the second game.

This is nothing new for UEFA as they are seeing this kind of complaints in every tournament they host. In many occasions, the UEFA are unfortunately wrong but they have not changed as they take all these critics as honours and never reply back. Leboeuf’s comments are very true and it is much expected from a former central defender. He may understand the hard feelings inside defenders like Pepe better.
