Story behind Gary Neville’s sack as Valencia manager

Why did Gary Neville get sacked as Valencia manager?

Gary Neville

Gary Neville was appointed as head coach at Valencia in Spain on 2 December 2015. Neville’s brother Phil had previously been the caretaker manager and continued to work with his brother at the club . Despite his work as football pundit at Sky Sports, Gary Neville failed miserably as Valencia manager. Let’s have a quick look at the reasons for the failure of the ex-Manchester United man at one of the most prestigious Spanish side.

 1. 3-5-2 Formation

When he took charge, the team wasn’t in great condition. Dani Parejo was leading the team and they were grabbing 3 points somehow, they drew against Barcelona at Mestalla (Luis Suarez’s goal in the 1-1 draw was quite controversial anyway Valencia played well in that game). Then Neville took charge and tried to implement the 3-5-2 formation which doesn’t suit Spanish Football or a team like Valencia who already had a better defense.
Valencia’s solid defense includes Gaya, Mustafi, Barragan etc.  and even Parejo does a lot of defensive work. There was no need at all to play that formation knowing the team’s playing style.

2.Often Played Players on wrong positions

Biggest shock Valencia received because of this wrong positioning was in the Copa Del Ray, against Barcelona. Gary Neville had Santi Mina, Cheryshev, Negredo, and Bakkali etc. Guys who are good forwards still he preferred to play an LB as LW another defender as RW and Rodrigo who just came from injury as ST.
And the backbone of Defense Mustafi got a red card, the rest of Valencia’s defensive efforts were taken care by the blistering MSN. This same error happened in some other games and Valencia dropped valuable points.

3. Didn’t produce results and lack of knowledge about the team

Valencia defeated Rapid Wien in Europa League with full-time scoreline 6-0. Santi Mina who was involved in 5 goals in that game was benched for 80% matches before that. Took away captaincy from Parejo who is the most hardworking player in the team. Considerably, he isn’t performing well and some reports claim that he even wanted to quit the club next season.
Team morale was destroyed , Gaya was left unhappy because of the arrival of another LB from. There is no reason to buy another first team LB when you have one of the world’s most promising left backs in the team. Valencia couldn’t win 13 of the first league matches under Gary Neville. Worst ever run in their history !

4. Valencia fans were unhappy with Gary Neville

There had been agitations and chants by Valencia fans to sack him. During Neville’s run as manager, the team got eliminated from Champions League, Copa Del Rey and then from Europa League. On 30 March 2016, Neville was sacked by the club. At the time of his sacking, Valencia were 14th in the league, only six points clear of the relegation zone, and had won only three of their 16 league games under Neville, also failing to keep a single clean sheet.
